NSCC Police Host Natural Gas Tabletop Exercise
with Emergency Responders
A natural gas tabletop exercise took place on March 11, 2024, which brought together multiple NSCC departments and municipal police and fire emergency personnel to test and evaluate safety procedures in the event of a natural gas emergency on the Danvers campus. The exercise was part of ongoing emergency response planning being conducted by the NSCC Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Participants of this exercise were given the hypothetical scenario that a construction contractor damaged a natural gas line while digging in the parking lot behind the Math and Science Building creating a gas leak, and were asked to respond as if it were a real emergency.
Exercises such as this are important because if a real emergency were to occur, we have already thought through our response and practiced our procedures. The frequency and content of tabletop exercises is currently being assessed to determine how best to serve our college community.
The importance of collaboration between the various college departments and our municipal emergency agencies during emergency events is critical. We are fortunate to share a strong partnership with the municipal police and fire departments, and these collaborations in coordination with the performance of emergency exercises help us to be well prepared for emergencies and to identify areas for improvement.
Sincere appreciation and thanks to everyone who participated in this exercise in emergency management preparedness.

Women's History Month
had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as 鈥淲omen鈥檚 History Week.鈥 Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as 鈥淲omen鈥檚 History Week.鈥 In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women鈥檚 History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as 鈥淲omen鈥檚 History Month.鈥 Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women鈥檚 History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as 鈥淲omen鈥檚 History Month.鈥 These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
"The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." - Gloria Steinem
As always, we welcome and invite the NSCC community to participate in this year's Women's History Month celebrations through the various events happening here, especially at the NSCC Libraries, and in the North Shore all month long.
