Join us for Mental Health First Aid Training!

Mental Health First Aid is being offered to NSCC faculty, staff, and students. It is designed to help address the Mental Health concerns of our students and our colleagues. It is our goal that each of you view MHFA similar to that of CPR - you won't be a doctor when you finish the training, but you could help someone who is having a mental health challenge.

The training focuses on helping participants recognize someone who is having a mental healthchallenge, how to approach them (if you choose to), how to engage in reflective listening, and how to assist the individual to connect with appropriate services within the community. A major focus of this training is also speaking about the need for self-care, as each of us encounters stressors in our day-to-day life. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing provides the certification upon completion of the training.

Please note that this is on a first come-first served basis. The training is open for up to 15 participants per campus session. Also, if you have already been trained, please remember you need to complete a training every 3 years to remain certified as a Mental Health First Aider.

Friday, October 18th from 9:00am - 5:00pm
天九电子 Campus: LS 312
Deadline for this selected training: Wednesday, October 2nd

Being Mindful of Religious Holidays and Observances

Dear NSCC Community:

While we continue working towards co-creating inclusive practices, processes, and policies at the College, we want to continue sharing resources that may be helpful this semester as many in our community spend time celebrating and observing across many religions. Currently, students are not automatically excused from class for religious observances; however, they may ask professors to work with them to make accommodations. Similarly, employees are not automatically excused from religious observances outside of the . Nonetheless, employees who observe religious holidays are encouraged to discuss with their managers in advance about celebrating or observing should it impact any work or schedule, particularly to explore how we can best support our NSCC community members鈥 faiths.

Based on the feedback received since this practice began, we鈥檇 like to now share ways that would automatically add religious holidays and observances to your NSCC Google Calendar:

Please contact Dan Hauge (dhauge@northshore.edu) if you have any questions or require further support.

Important Governance System Announcement

The Governance System meetings will have a delayed start this year. Governance committees will try to officially begin meeting in October instead of September. Due to Work to Rule, some committees have not had the opportunity to identify their leadership and/or Forum Steering Committee (FSC) representation. The month of September will be used to identify those individuals if possible.

Please be aware that there will *NOT* be a College Forum meeting for the month of September. We have updated the  accordingly.

There are still governance committee positions available! If you are interested in serving in governance or if you have any questions, contact us at forum_gov@northshore.edu.

Volunteer Opportunities
The NSCC Police are looking for your help!

Assist the NSCC Police Department by Volunteering to be an Evacuation Monitor

The primary responsibility of an evacuation monitor is to provide for the safe and orderly evacuation of our community members in the event of an emergency that requires a building evacuation. This is performed by assisting the NSCC police by directing people to the nearest exit and instructing them to assemble at the closest evacuation assembly point and wait for further instructions.

How do I learn more?
Start by emailing Deputy Chief Kevin Marshall at kmarshal@northshore.edu and letting him know you are interested in participating. Training will be provided by the NSCC Police Department which will take approximately 30-40 minutes. The dates and times of the training will be taking place towards the end of August.
